DOMESTIC TRAFFIC GROWS BY 22% AT EL ALTET

Domestic traffic has grown by 22.5 percent at the airport in Alicante-Elche in March, compared to the same month last year, with an additional 107,628 passengers.

Overall, a total of 669,004 passengers, 4.4 percentage points higher than 2014 were recorded using the airport, according to Airport Authority AENA in a statement released last week.

By nationality, passengers travelling through the airport came from UK with 264,335 passengers, followed by the Netherlands with 47,003, 45,887 Norway, Germany with 45,679, 37 741 Belgium and Sweden with 24,203 passengers.

In relation to the number of operations, the airport handled 4,737 flights in March, 4.1 percent more than in March 2014.

The greatest number of international flights were the UK totaled 1,578 operations, Spain (1,139), Netherlands (292), Germany (289), Norway (278), Belgium (275) and Algeria and Sweden (146).

In the full year, between January and March, El Altet airport has registered 1,671,423 passengers, 4.6 percent more than in the first quarter of 2014, and managed a total of 12,339 flights, 1.9% more than the same period last year.

Meanwhile the figures were not so rosy for San Javier Airport which has lost one in four passengers during the last 12 months.

In March just 28,551 passengers used the facility, albeit this figure was up 25.6% on the same month last year. However just 314 aircraft landed or took off, 10.5% less than in March 2014.

But the figures still show San Javier to be one of the most cost effective airports in Spain in terms of cost per passenger at just 10.41€ per person, slightly under the national average of 10.55€

Adolfo Suárez Airport Madrid-Barajas recorded the highest passenger traffic in March, with 3.6 million, which translates into a growth of 13.5% with 14 months of consecutive monthly increases since February 2014 .

Barcelona-El Prat Airport was the second airport with 2.89 million passengers, 7.1% more.

Also showing growth in passenger numbers airports Malaga-Costa del Sol with 900,448 (6.1%); Palma de Mallorca with 951,227 (7.2%) and Ibiza with 164,527 (13.7%)
