Moscow and Beijing are said to be intensifying cooperation

Russian and Chinese warships may soon be seen of the east coast of Spain, after both countries announced a joint navel exercise which will take place in the Mediterranean Sea around the middle of this month.

It is the first time the countries have collaborated in this part of the world, and a total of nine warships till take part in the exercise.

During a monthly news briefing this week, Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said, “The aim is to deepen both countries’ friendly and practical cooperation, and increase our navies’ ability to jointly deal with maritime security threats”.

“What needs saying is that these exercises are not aimed at any third party and have nothing to do with the regional situation,” he added, saying that the Chinese Navy would divert warships which are currently on anti-pirate missions in the Gulf of Aden.

Moscow and Beijing are said to be intensifying cooperation as both countries oppose US criticism of its military policies, with China being accused of aggressive deployments in the South China Sea, and Russia being subjected to economic sanctions over its position in Ukraine.

It was also reported this week that the US has given 200 million dollars to help Ukraine purchase arms.
