The Spanish Secretary of State for Security, Francisco Martinez, along with the Secretary of State for Social Services and Equality, Susana Camarero, launched a new observatory this week which will focus on the abolition of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Francisco Martinez, who pointed out that in 2014 65.6% of a total of 1,285 hate crimes fell into this bracket, and so the government enforces their commitment through the Ministry of Interior to focus on these crimes in order to “defend and protect victims”.

Susana Camarero stressed that the new centre “will serve to consolidate and defend the rights of people regardless of their sexual orientation and gender” and to “promote values ​​such as respect for diversity and the free development of the people”.

The Observatory, which will include a website and a mobile application, will offer a quick response to victims of discrimination.
