A correction seems called for in relation to Mr. Kearney’s claim to be an informed commentator, deeply involved in Orihuela politics.
For years he has been the personal, loyal and biased mouthpiece for Pedro Mancebo who was head of the Centro Liberal Renovador (CLR) party until CLR gave up politically and decided not to contest the 24 May local elections.
Pedro Mancebo then failed to be included in any party’s list of candidates.
Interestingly, when Pedro Mancebo announced his retirement from local politics he declared his support for the Popular Party (the official one, not the breakaway PP group of Pepa Ferrando whom he earlier supported for Mayoress).
He did not declare his support for the Ciudadanos Party headed by his former political colleague and CLR President, Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas who, with his business boss, cynically took over the local control of an emerging national party when they decided CLR’s reputation had slumped so low that it could not run again as a local Orihuela party.
Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas produced one of the fastest turn of coats in political history, resigning one day from his job as councillor and President of CLR to becoming the next day head and chief candidate of Ciudadanos.
Mr. Kearney, without a role as personal mouthpiece any longer, offers his comments on Orihuela politics from the same biased position as ever.
No doubt in line with Pedro Mancebo’s endorsement, he suggests the new clean Popular Party which is split in two will get as many seats as last time when it was united. Unbiased commentators put their prospects much lower.
What has kept Pedro Mancebo and Mr. Kearney going for the last 4 years has been their undisguised hostility to C.L.A.R.O. which they tried relentlessly to destroy. His prediction that C.L.A.R.O., focusing on only one area of the municipality, the coast, will not get a single councillor elected will turn out to be one of his greatest, deliberate errors.
In the past two elections in 2007 and 2011 C.L.A.R.O. got half of the votes cast on the coast, more than the two major parties, the PP and Socialists together. There will be more voters on the coast this time than before.
C.L.A.R.O. has worked tirelessly over the past 9 years for Orihuela Costa and is fielding a stronger than ever team from Orihuela Costa, including 6 Brits, 2 Swedes, 1 Austrian and one Polish candidate. Furthermore, this time C.L.A.R.O. has strong support in Orihuela city and surrounding villages, headed by two well known and respected political figures, both like Bob Houliston, expelled from the CLR-CLARO one time alliance of Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas group in order to curtail their democratic rights.
Orihuela politics is a jungle with cut- throated contenders out to secure financial gain – commonly called corruption. It is essential to know who is who in order to vote for a party which will support and defend the interests of Orihuela Costa and Orihuela city too.
No one should pay heed to Mr. Kearney’s biased and deliberately distorted political comments. C.L.A.R.O had been the only party that has continuously campaigned for the needs and rights of the people of Orihuela Costa.
