III ORIHUELA BEACH TRIATHLON

In all there were 210 triathletes taking part, including a number from the National High Performance Centre Infanta Cristina in Los Narejos.

Last Sunday saw the Third Orihuela Beach Triathlon held on Campoamor Beach. The event was organized by the Tragamillas Athletics Club and sponsored by Orihuela Sports and Costal Departments as well as the International Residents of Orihuela.

The contest comprised of a 750 metre Mediterranean swim and a 20 km bike race which was followed by a 5km road race. Each of the activities was carried out in the Campoamor area enabling the maximum participation of the many spectators.

In all there were 210 triathletes taking part, including a number from the National High Performance Centre Infanta Cristina in Los Narejos.

Two of them, Placido Domingo Venegas and Juan Ruben Viera, were neck and neck throughout and the pair had built up a healthy lead by the time they got into the 5km road race. However it was Placido Venegas that finished the stronger hold off his teammate over the final sprint and taking first place in the event overall.

In the women’s event, despite trailing after the swim, Marina Lopez, made up the distance in the bike race, overtaking all of her rivals and building up a healthy lead by the time she donned her running shoes. Marina then went on to achieve a comfortable victory.

The men’s race was won by Placido Domingo Venegas of CT. Diablillos de Rivas,. He was followed by Juan Ruben Viera of Cidade de Lugo Fluvial and in third was Mateo Pesquer of Mandarache Cartagena.

In the female category the winner was Marina Martinez of CT. Tragamillas-Ciclos Vicea-Mercaluz, followed by Eliana Sotelo CT. Laboratorios Sys and in third place Andrea Jimenez CT. Diablillos de Rivas.

Victory in the team classification in both the men’s and the women’s race went to the hosts, CT. Tragamillas-Ciclos Vicea-Mercaluz

The trophies were presented to the winners by Cllr for Sport Luis Galiano, Cllr for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, and representatives of the local police, the Valencian Triathlon Federation and Francisco Belmonte, President of Club Tragamillas.
