NEW RECORD OF 16 MILLION INBOUND TOURISTS TO APRIL

The United Kingdom, France and Germany accounted for 53% of total inbound tourists

The Inbound Tourism Survey, showed a record figure of 16 million inbound tourists in the first four months of the year, an increase of 4.4% on the same period last year.

The United Kingdom, France and Germany accounted for 53% of total inbound tourists, with increases in all three emitting markets. However, the largest year-on-year percentage increases were in smaller markets such as Italy, the United States, Ireland, Belgium and Asian countries.

All the autonomous regions posted increases, except for the Canary Islands, where the number was the same as last year. Particularly notable are the Region of Madrid – up 11.7%, the Balearic Islands – up 9.5% and Andalusia – up 6.8%.

The April figure for registered inbound tourists was also a record at 5.4 million, 2.8% up year-on-year. The result is largely due to the excellent performance of the French, Belgian and more distant markets such as Asia and Latin America.

Main emitting markets

A total of 3,276,016 tourists visited Spain from the United Kingdom, an increase of 5.5% on the first four months last year, accounting for 20.5% of all arrivals in the period.

France was the second biggest emitting market, at 2,638,825 tourists, up 4.7% on the first four months last year, and 16.5% of the total. Next came Germany with 2,521,835 tourists, representing a rise of 0.3% and 15.7% of the total for the four months. With 16.1% of the total, Germany stood in third place for April.

The Nordic countries contributed 1,510,455 tourists, a fall of 7.9% in the four-month period, and 9.4% of the total. In April, the figure was 375,291 tourists, a fall of 12.3%, which affected the Canary Islands above all. The April figure was 6.9% of the total, the fourth highest.

Italy was the emitting market for 990,444 tourists in the four months, a rise of 12.2% and 6.2% of the total. The April figure was 351,323 Italian tourists, with a rise of 4.6%. The Region of Madrid, the Balearic Islands and the Region of Valencia were the destinations of choice for Italian tourists.

Also worth noting are the increases in the first four months of the year of tourists from the United States (10.8%), Ireland (9.5%), Switzerland (8.7%) and Belgium (8.2%).

Main destination autonomous regions

Catalonia was the region with the highest number of inbound tourists between January and April, at 4,104,127 (up 4.5%), accounting for 25.6% of the total. It also led the list in April, at 1,424,243 tourists (up 3.2%), 26.3% of the total. French tourists were particularly significant in these figures.

The Canary Islands were visited by 4,049,190 tourists in the first four months of the year (down 0.7%), accounting for 25.3% of the total. In April, there was a fall of 5.5% to 904,050 tourists, accounting for 16.7%, with the fall mainly due to the British and Nordic markets.

Andalusia was visited by 2,165,691 tourists, up 6.8% between January and April and accounting for 13.5% of the total. In April, the total was 831,238 tourists, accounting for 15.4% of the total and a fall of 3.1%, due mainly to the German, British and Nordic markets.

A total of 1,205,083 tourists visited the Balearic Islands in the first four months of the year, a rise of 9.5% and 7.5% of the total. The figure for April was 690,647, 0.6% up, and 12.8% of the total. There was a rise in tourist numbers from Germany and Italy, which offset the fall from the Netherlands and Nordic countries.

The Region of Valencia was visited by 1,481,428 tourists between January and April, 9.3% of the total and a rise of 4%. In April, the number of tourists was 549,582, 10.2% of the total and a rise of 6.5% on April 2014, largely thanks to tourists from France and Italy.

The Region of Madrid was the chosen destination for 1,560,726 tourists, a rise of 11.7% and 9.7% of the total for the period. In April, 519,497 tourists came to Madrid, particularly from Asian countries, Italy and Latin America, accounting for 9.6% of the total. The April increase of 28.2% was the biggest for the month.

Form of travel, accommodation and type of holiday

A total of 13,107,491 inbound tourists arrived by air in the first four months of the year, 81.8% of all arrivals and up by 4.5%. In April, a total of 4,396,507 tourists came by air, 81.3% of the total and an increase of 2.2%.

Hotels were the accommodation of choice for 10,387,400 tourists, 64.9% of the total and a rise of 3.9%. The number staying in hotels in April was 3,405,536, up 0.5% and representing 63% of the total.
The number of tourists choosing to travel independently was up by 7.3% in the first four months of the year, at 11,442,896, or 71.4% of the total, while the remaining 28.6% (4,572,523) came on a package holidays (down 2.1%).

In April the number arriving on package holidays fell by 11.1% year-on-year.
