A hi-tech gang that used electronic gear to rob cars across Alicante Province has been broken up by the National Police, with Russian and Ukrainian nationals arrested in the Santa Pola area.
The operation against the crooks, aged between their mid-twenties and mid-fifties, started last September, after multiple reports of property being stolen from cars, including incidents in Torrevieja.
The crooks used devices to crack electronic codes to open up the cars, often outside the owner’s home, and in most cases it was not obvious that the cars had been broken into. Gang members would be on the look-out in case people appeared and they would be in constant touch with their colleagues via mobile phones as they were carrying out the break-in.
Money and valuables were then lifted from the cars, as well as house keys, with the crooks then using them to enter the property. A couple of guns and ammunition were recovered by the National Police during their house raids in Santa Pola.
