During the seven-day campaign focussing on speeding motorists, 581,294 vehicles were checked by the Guardia Civil, of which 31,086 were found breaking the law. However, the controls conducted by the various local and regional police forces need to be added to those figures.

The campaign ran between the 17th and 23rd of April, focussing mostly on the secondary road network, where the majority of serious and fatal incidents occur.

Four of the drivers caught face criminal proceedings as they exceeded the maximum permitted speed limit by more than 80 kilometres per hour.

Drivers caught speeding face fines of between 100 and 600 euro, plus the loss of between 2 and six points. Exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 kilometres per hour on urban roads, or 80 kilometres per hour on major roads, transfers the offence to criminal, with offenders facing between six to twelve months in prison, community service and the withdrawal of the licence for up to 4 years, in addition to a hefty fine.
