The man, an 81-year-old local resident, who walked with a stick, was said to have been preparing to cross the road at a pedestrian crossing on avenida de Los Fresnos, after collecting medication from a pharmacy.

According to witnesses, a car approached the crossing at “high speed” and the octogenarian verbally reprimanded the driver for going so fast.

The driver got out of his car and punched the pensioner in the face. The elderly man fell backwards to the ground, falling on his back and hitting his neck and head on the ground.

The attacker, said to be male and approximately 25 years of age, returned to his vehicle, in which a female passenger was waiting, and drove off.

Several witnesses recorded the vehicle registration and vehicle type, and one witness managed to video the incident.

When the emergency services arrived, the victim was still lay on the zebra crossing, where he fell, having suffered an apparent cardiac arrest. Medics attempted to revive the man but could do nothing to save his life.

The investigation into the incident was handed over to the judicial police. At 18:00 on the same day, a suspect was in custody.
