Brave officers from the Guardia Civil rescued four residents from a burning building in the centre of Torrevieja on Monday.

Two of the residents had to be taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. Among those rescued was an elderly woman with impaired mobility.

The incident occurred on Monday evening when the four officers were on patrol in the town of Torrevieja and noticed a “strong” smell of smoke.

Having searched through the local streets they discovered a home emitting large flames.

The four officers entered the building and first located a man who was “very nervous” with an elderly female with mobility problems. The officers immediately extracted them on account of their disposition and their “confused and visibly affected” state.

The officers then heard the screams of a neighbor, who was on the third floor, who they told to go up to the terrace. The officers reentered the building and managed to reach it through an adjoining housing and rescued the victim. Then, a third time, the officers reentered and rescued a neighbour who was on the fourth floor.

The Emergency Coordination Centre dispatched a Basic Life Support ambulance which took the injured victims, a man aged 54 and a woman of 88 years, both suffering from smoke inhalation, to the Hospital in Torrevieja.

The fire service extinguished the blaze at 22:15, around ninety minutes after the alarm was raised. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
