Torrevieja resident arrested on drugs run

A 41-year-old resident of Torrevieja has been arrested by the Guardia Civil as a suspected drug trafficker, after he was stopped in a hire car with 40.8 kilos of marijuana in his possession.

The vehicle was intercepted on the A-92N in the Granada area of Baza, when officers had been involved in a routine checkpoint arranged under a drugs prevention operation which has been investigating and controlling the trafficking routes from North Africa since 2013.

The vehicle had been stopped as it was driving towards Puerto Lumbreras (Murcia), after officers had observed the vehicle committing a traffic violation.

As the vehicle was stopped, the officers noted that the driver was alone, and there was a strong smell of marijuana coming from inside.

When the officers searched the boot of the car they found nine large bags filled with the narcotic substance.

Having then checked the documentation of the suspect, the officers found that he had been stopped in April, carrying 100 kilos of marijuana.
