The company operating the life guard service on the beaches of Torrevieja has reported that their teams assisted thousands of people throughout the season.

Life guards are contracted to a private company in Torrevieja, and operate from June 15 to September 15, with two periods, “average” and “high” season.

During the summer period, a total of 3,173 interventions were conducted, mostly of a minor nature and the affected party not requiring further assistance.

In June, 196 people were assisted, mostly being due to jellyfish stings or minor injuries, but there were also 4 resuscitations which required a transfer to hospital. In addition, there were 9 rescues with assistance at sea.

July was busier than June with a total of 1,044 people assisted on land, 10 people resuscitated and taken to hospital, and 25 rescues at sea.

In August, the figure continued to increase with 1,627 people assisted on the beaches, 16 resuscitations and a total of 54 rescues at sea.

Finally, in September, 89 people were treated on the shore, 8 people were revived and 17 bathers had to be taken care of at sea.

These were not the only activities the life guards conducted, as they were also involved in what is known as “social assistance”, involving such activities as assisting to locate lost children and some elderly people.

The staff on the beach also assisted those with reduced mobility use the facilities, with a total of 512 people being helped into the sea and 200 being transported in a specially adapted vehicle.
