The mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén, has this week urged the president of the Generalitat, Alberto Fabra of the Partido Popular, to intervene and takes action against the five members of the Orihuela PP group who are “accused and convicted of very serious crimes”.
The call came after rumblings throughout the PP group indicate that a number of members of their own party are both disappointed and concerned about the lack of action from a president who had both vowed to clean up his party, and had previously said that no member of his group who had been accused of corruption could represent the party in the future.
The latest discrepancies arose after Fabra called on the councillor for tourism, Milagrosa Martínez, to resign from her seat in Valencia as she was facing a trial in connection with the infamous Gürtel case, one of the biggest corruption investigations in Spain´s history. Fabra had also said that he would not force the move and would not take any action on the continuity of her role in her local position in Novelda. Martínez faces 11 years in prison when she attends the trial later this month.
In a statement, Fabra confirmed that there are guidelines for those facing corruption charges and that he is dealing with it at regional level, but locally, “it must be the local group to take that decision”.
The president of the PP in Valencia, Alfonso Rus, argued in favour of Fabra´s lack of action, stating that he believes that a politician should not be forced to leave office “whilst not guilty”.
In an impromptu address to the media, Guillén pointed out that amongst the group who have been trying to remove him and his team from governing, “there are five accused and convicted of very serious crimes”, urging Fabra to “take the decision”, especially given the fact that it is almost half of the PP trying to take over in Orihuela who are in the position, but criticising Fabra´s stance, “how is he going to take action in the city of Orihuela?”
When asked about the progress of the censure motion, Guillén affirmed that this is “in the courts”, but also pointed out how his team are doing a good job at managing the municipality, and that “corruption has been banished, honesty is what prevails”.
