Earth Hour 2014

Orihuela Council has joined with the WWF´s global initiative, aimed at raising environmental awareness, involving millions of people in thousands of cities around the world, in recognition of the concerns against climate change.

Earth Hour is celebrated on the 29th of March, at 20:30 local time, wherever you are in the world, when the lights will be switched off in support of the planet.

The campaign has been growing in support since it began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, with a number of global initiatives benefiting directly.

In Uganda, half a million trees have been planted in the world’s first Earth Hour Forest in a fight against the 6000 hectares of deforestation. In Russia, a long-awaited law to protect the country’s seas from oil pollution was finally passed after 120,000 Russians brought their voices to the government. In Argentina, hectares of sea are being protected, raising the level of protection of Argentina’s seas from 1% to more than 4%.

In Orihuela, the symbolic darkness with fall over the Palacio Marqués de Arneva, the church tower at the Iglesia de Santa Justa, the Seminario de Orihuela, and of course, the town hall itself.

Everybody around the globe is encouraged to join in, at 20:30 wherever you are, as darkness spreads around the night sky, also enabling us to view the beauty of the stars above, with the guidance from the WWF that “Within each one of us is the power to achieve greatness. No action is too big or too small. Join the mission to protect our planet. Use your power.”
