Barcelona’s B team duly hammered in the nails of the coffin of Hercules’ turbulent four year reign in Spain’s Segunda A, with mainly poor performances and plainly now in big trouble with debts and acrimony flying everywhere.
The Alicantinos now drop down to the regional leagues of Segunda B, and will need a massive injection of cash and support to sort out their off-field problems. On it the Barca B boys soon sorted their dejected opponents out with two goals in the first half from Munir on 17 minutes and Bagnack just before the interval.
Hercules responded with a consolation goal from Eldin nine minutes into the second half, but in the final analysis Spain’s 11th largest city’s team go down in bottom place, finishing three points adrift of Mirandes, Real Jaen and Real Madrid’s B team, RM Castilla: all four go down to the regional leagues.
Ironically the result that put RM Castilla down was an all-important victory from one of Hercules’ main local rivals Real Murcia, who put themselves firmly into the play-offs.
This comes only one season after Los Pimentoneros getting promoted back up from 2B, and it was only in 2007/8 Murcia were in La Liga. So to win the play-offs and get back to the highest echelon of Spanish football in World Cup year would be a great achievement.
The priceless only goal was scored early by Kike Garcia in the 14th minute, but with RM Castilla vainly fighting to stay in Segunda A many Murcian nails were bitten at the superb La Condomina stadium, but by the end it was home smiles all round.
The play-off semi-finals will see Murcia take on Córdoba and Sporting Gijon facing Las Palmas.
Barcelona B came third but as a second team are ineligible to go up to La liga, no clubs are allowed to field two teams in the same league.
The play-offs will be to decide who will join Eibar and Deportivo to go up into the stratospheric La Liga, replacing Real Betis, Osasuna and Valladolid who are all relegated.
By the end of a hugely eventful season Elche managed to stay just above the relegation zone in 16th place in their first season back in La Liga after 26 years. Will Real Murcia join them?
