AIRPORT FIGURES SHOW COSTA BLANCA IS IN FOR A BUSY SUMMER

The summer tourist season of 2014 looks set to become a record breaker, if flight figures released for May are anything to go by, with Alicante-Elche and Murcia San Javier airports both showing an increase in passenger numbers.

Alicante-Elche looks on target to break 10 million passengers by the end of the year, after May saw 974,449 passengers served, 4.8% more than in the same month of last year, and more than double the national increase which stood at 2%. Since the beginning of the year, the airport has seen 3.5 million passengers, an increase of 7%.

Of the May totals, 880,139 were foreigners, of which 452,261 were British and 73,109 were German. In addition, there were 57,449 Norwegians, 58,001 Dutch passengers and 45,329 from Belgium. Alicante-Elche airport handled 6,875 flights during May, 3.6% more than the same month last year.

Down at Murcia San Javier airport, they too saw a record number of passengers in May, with a total of 129,000 people being dealt with, an increase also above the national average, standing at 3.2% more than the same period of last year.

Perhaps not surprising, the busiest airport in Spain was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport, serving the capital, which saw a 4.1% increase in May, the fourth consecutive month that passenger numbers have grown, with international passenger numbers increasing by 6.4%. Specifically, the airport in Madrid recorded 3,544,659 travellers in May, while 2,508,770 were international passengers and 44,293 were on charter flights, an increase of 10.9%.
