The two main unions representing French air traffic controllers, the SNCTA and the UNSA-ICNA, have called for their workers to strike from Tuesday the 24th, until Sunday the 29th of June, in protest against the “Single European Sky” initiative proposed by the European Commission.
The unions are concerned that the move will decrease air traffic control resources in France, and result in the privatization of some services, both of which will result in job losses and a reduction is pay and working conditions for their staff.
The strike action could paralyze air traffic across France, although many other flights can be diverted around the problem, there would also be considerable delays to most European services.
The French government is meeting with representatives to try to avoid the action. Meanwhile, many train services were also affected in the country this week as workers on the rail network extended a strike in opposition to reforms of their network.
