CHEAPER MOBILE ROAMING CHARGES FROM JULY

A holiday abroad this summer can now mean savings can be made when phoning home, as the European Commission has announced that mobile phone roaming charges will be further capped from the 1st of July.

Even better, the legislation paves the way for the intended abolition of roaming charges in the future, as soon as 2016.

The standard rate for making a call will now be 19 cents per minute, a reduction of 21% of the 2013 rate of 24 cents. Receiving a call will cost 5 cents per minute, as opposed to 7 cents, and even the costs of texting and data services will be cut by 25% and 55% respectively.

To browse the internet whilst abroad, the new capped rate will be 20 cents per MB, down from 45 cents in 2013. The rules also allow for a “decoupled” service, which means that a user is no longer tied to a single operator for voice, text and data, and may choose other local networks.

The agreement to reduce, cap and eventually eliminate roaming charges was first approved in 2012 and is on target for the total elimination of roaming charges in 2016, as per the plans presented. Roaming charges were at their peak years ago when EU started to take action in 2007. The results are a 80-90% drop across roaming services in 2014 compared to 2007.
