The National Police have arrested 27 people for ‘clocking’, winding back the speedometers, at a number of car dealerships in Spain. The arrests are said to have taken place at garages in Madrid, Toledo, Ciudad Real, Jaen and Alicante
Three of those arrested were equipped with sophisticated diagnostic tools. They are said to have varied the number of miles a vehicle was ‘clocked’ by anything between 80,000 and 120,000 kilometres,, thereby doubling the value of the cars .
So far 48 vehicles are found to have been handled in this way, for each of which they would charge up to 900 euros, for high-end vehicles.
Investigations began following a complaint at the police station in Ponferrada where a local resident told authorities that he was concerned the mileage recorded on a vehicle recently purchased from a dealer in Toledo, was not genuine.
Following the investigation by officers, it was found that the genuine mileage on the vehicle in question was actually 207,000 kms, which had been adjusted to 87,000.
During further investigations, agents learned that there were far more dealers involved, 12 in Madrid, 5 in Toledo, one in Ciudad Real, Jaen and one in Alicante. They also discovered that speedo tampering was being made for dealers who drove the vehicles in from outside the province.
