Front of the house where the murder occured

Joseph, known locally to his friends as Pepito, had been to dinner with his family on Sunday in Alicante. He was, 82 years of age, lived alone, but maintained frequent contact with his relatives. He saw them on a regular basis and was always punctual for any meeting.

So it was no surprise when, as a result of a missed lunch appointment, a nephew decided to call at his uncle’s home, located in the city centre. He rang the bell, but nobody answered. Instead he found the old man lying dead on the hallway floor, just inside the door of his house.

According to preliminary investigations, a spokesman said that he seems to have been the victim of a homicide. Signs of violence were evident suggesting that he had been beaten to death.

Homicide officers of the Alicante Judicial Police speculate that his death could have been as a result of a robbery as a motive, however, they also say that there was no forced access

The events took place during the day on either Friday or Saturday in a three-storey block at number 28 Calle Henrietta Ortega, close to the busy Avenida de Salamanca. The building houses three properties, all apparently owned by the family of Joseph.

Everything suggests that the now deceased opened the door to his murderer. The reasons why he did so are still under investigation. The participation of a third party in the events have been discarded. The court of Instruction 2 of Alicante has now opened proceedings and is waiting for police progress in the matter.

This is the sixth violent death in the province since 4 August on which day there was a housewife murdered in Orihuela by her husband, who allegedly beat her to death and fled. He was eventually captured by the police in Murcia.

That same week, an 18 year-old girl was arrested after ending the life of her newborn son that she had abandoned in a refuse container.

Another murder took place in Denia where on 20 August the body of a man was found abandoned in a holiday apartment.

Just a couple of days later, workers at the recycling plant in Elche found the body of a newborn baby in a backpack with the placenta still attached. This case is still under investigation.

In El Campello, on 25 August, a pensioner stabbed his wife to death before taking his own life with the same knife. The incident shocked the population. This crime was the last violent death seen in the province until last weekend’s murder of Pepito in Alicante.

This is the worst run of violent crimes that seen in the Alicante region in recent years, where previously the crime rate had been falling.
