Mari Luz Martinez and Rosario Romero

Mamen Mateo, Torrevieja’s Councillor for Health, announced last Tuesday that the Award of Torrevieja’s Volunteer of the Year would go to Caritas charity worker Rosario Romero.

The annual prize, which is always made on the occasion of the ‘Day of International Volunteers’, honoured Rosario who has been working tirelessly for the Catholic charity in the Parish of Our Lady of the Rosary of La Mata for over 20 years.

The jury also agreed to recognize Mari Luz Martinez, for her work of over thirty years, as a volunteer with several associations, but particularly with the charity Afecáncer since it was first established in the town.

As well as performing many of the administrative tasks she also provides emotional support to cancer patients who are terminally ill, showing great compassion and professionalism in her voluntary work. Martinez has worked for three decades with other groups such as Nueva Fraternidad, (New Brotherhood), with which she has travelled to Rwanda as a volunteer to support fieldworkers with various health and educational projects aimed at improving the conditions for population groups who are at high risk.

However, the Volunteer of the Year, Rosario Romero, arrived in La Mata 22 years ago, since which time she has worked with all local volunteer groups including the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary, which is responsible for distributing food to the needy.

Four years ago, when Caritas was first founded in La Mata, she made sure that it was incorporated with all the other groups carrying out similar work.

Around 130 people attended the dinner and awards ceremony which was held in their honour at the Hotel Cabo Cervera.

The jury responsible for making the awards met recently in La Mata, and included representatives from twelve local groups as well as a representative from the Department of Social Welfare and the councilor who were both non-voting.
