Despite being told by Orihuela Council that they will have to remove the illegal barrier erected by the urbanisation some years ago, blocking the La Regia walkway through to the Cabo Roig beach, residents of the Bella Vista Urbanisation, have completely defied the Orihuela authorities by replacing the gate with a brand new fence.
The new fixture now shows no signs of the previous gate ever existing, their logic presumably being that the public will forget that it was ever there and the ‘problem’ of restoring access may well go away.
The move is seen as a direct snub to the Orihuela acting mayor Antonio Zapata, who is also responsible for infrastructure, in that it is his office that is taking action to remove the gate.
Just last week the Councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, told the Leader that the legal steps to reopen the walkway are nearing the end of the allowed time period. “As with all administrative procedures in Spain, these things take time, and we want to make sure that we don´t take shortcuts that could cause problems in the future”, she said, “but the final phase of consultation is nearing the end, at which point Councillor Zapata, will appear before the press to announce when demolition action will begin”.
