An ambulance driver is set to appear in court in Dénia on Tuesday, after being found drunk whilst covering emergency provision at a Three Kings parade in the town of Teulada, located between Calpe and Xábia.

Moreover, the driver and the ambulance were unable to attend an incident just 100 metres away, on account of the driver being intoxicated, it is alleged.

A child had suffered an injury and so the emergency ambulance on standby was called, but there was no response. The local police attended the scene and upon locating the driver they believed that alcohol had been consumed and that the driver of the ambulance was over the legal alcohol limit, but they were unable to carry out a test on account of not having any equipment to do so.

The Guardia Civil attended and conducted an alcohol test, which reveal that the driver had quadruple the permitted amount, registering 0.78 milligrams of alcohol in the blood, whereas the maximum for a driver of this kind of vehicle is 0.15.

The local police of Teulada have been campaigning for some time to have access to alcoholmeters, which would have led to a speedier conclusion in this case, as well as many others, without having to wait for the assistance of the Guardia Civil.

It is also alleged that the driver did not have the appropriate certification to act as an ambulance technician for such a parade, after new legislation came into force in the New Year.
