ORIHUELA GOVERNMENT FOCUS ON PARTIES OVER THE NEEDY

Orihuela´s first plenary meeting of the year was particularly notable this month, on account of a number of the councillors who make up the municipal corporation absent.

Ousted former president of the Partido Popular, Pepa Ferrando, was attending a meeting in Valencia with the regional heads of her political group in an attempt to salvage her career. Former mayor and previous party head Monica Lorente was still absent, having been on leave since the announcement of her pregnancy. Asuncion Mayoral, ousted from CLR had announced her resignation previously, whilst former party colleague Juan Ignacio López-Bas had a justified absence with the secretary. From the Los Verdes, the councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, was also certified on sick leave, as of course is her party colleague and mayor, Monseratte Guillén, still recovering from major heart surgery.

Even with the reduced numbers, the session was not without the usual confrontations, starting off with the acting mayor, Antonio Zapata, being criticised by the CLR spokesperson, Pedro Mancebo, for not allowing a motion to be heard.

With a three hour session somewhat shorter than previous meetings, only two motions were discussed, one raised by CLARO spokesperson Bob Houliston relating to social welfare on the coast, which was also criticised by Mancebo as nothing more than “electioneering, opportunistic and with false concern”. The motion was carried.

The second motion was relating to the fiestas del barrio de San Antón and the fact that a competition had been previously left out. Mancebo was also critical of elements of the Three Kings parade whilst talking about the fiesta motion.

The conclusion is that the representatives are clearly focussed on the needs to address what happens in fiestas and parties, but less so on the needs of the people who are facing hardship, and even eviction, as whether the point was simply electioneering or not, the help requested to those in need has once again been directed towards having a good time.
