All boat owners in Torrevieja should now be in receipt of Publicity material telling them of the protocols they should follow if they come across distressed Sea turtles in the region. This is the result of an initiative currently being implemented by Torrevieja Marinas and the Yacht Club in conjunction with the Ministry of the Environment.

The Torrevieja authorities currently manage over 2,000 berths for boats and recreational sports in the area, which tends to increase during the spring and summer, the months which also the highest concentration of sea turtles off the coast.

While the incidences of capturing sea turtles by recreational fishermen is extremely rare, it is common for casual sailors to find loggerheads with problems when prompt action can mean the difference between life and death for these endangered animals.

It is always the case that Sea turtles encountering difficulties at sea or those accidentally caught in nets, should always be handed over to the authorities said a spokesman since they may be suffering from some kind of illness or disease which may not be visible to the naked eye (intestinal obstruction, infection, gas emboli) that could well require veterinary care or assessment. As such those coming into contact are always advised to dial 112.

Of the 10 loggerhead turtles recovered alive in Torrevieja since 2006, seven were rescued and passed onto the authorities.
