Chairman Keith Carter with Guardia Officer Francisco Morales

The Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion gathered at the Olympia Restaurant Mil Palmeras last Thursday evening for their regular monthly meeting although with rather more anticipation than is usually the case as the evening’s guest speaker was Francisco Morales, a serving member of the Guardia Civil.

Francisco, who is one of a team of five volunteers behind the increasingly popular N332 Website and Facebook page, explained that he was delighted to attend the meeting.

After his colleague Mark Nolan had explained the thinking behind the Facebook venture, which had grown from humble beginnings just two short months ago to a reference site with over 10,000 followers, Francisco took to the floor with his presentation on Driving in Spain.

He started with background on the Guardia Civil themselves, many of whom are currently serving across the globe alongside the United Nations. He explained that having returned from serving a 12 month tour in a conflict zone himself he joined Trafico in Torrevieja when he quickly became aware of the difficulties faced by expatriate drivers in Spain.

His concerns were shared by a number of colleagues so, together, they hit on the idea of the Facebook site. At no stage though did they ever consider just how popular it would become with it now reaching the point where it virtually needs full time attention.

Francisco spoke in very general terms about problems experienced by expat drivers as he briefly examined the law and although he wasn’t able to deal with specific problems he did take questions which were answered by email the following day.

Following the presentation the Branch Chairman Keith Carter spoke of the close relationship that had developed between the Guardia Civil and the Royal British Legion in the area, thanking him for his talk and inviting him to attend the Remembrance Day Service in Mil Palmeras. Francisco was then presented with a Certificate of Appreciation together with a number of small souvenirs.
