As the political term ends, one legacy that the current councillor for the Orihuela Costa leaves behind, Martina Scheurer, is that not only have the beaches of Orihuela been awarded more Blue Flag awards than any other municipality in the Valencia region, the Orihuela Costa this year has more Blue Flags than ever before.
In total, the beaches of Orihuela have 8 Blue Flags and the marinas have 2, making a total of 10 accreditations based on such criteria as water quality, facilities and cleanliness, amongst others.
Therefore, Blue Flags will this year be flying on the beaches of Punta Prima, Cala Flamenca, Cala Bosque (La Zenia), La Caleta-Cabo Roig, Cala Capitán-Cabo Roig, Aguamarina, Campoamor and Barranco Rubio, and in the marinas of Marina Cabo Roig and Club Náutico Dehesa de Campoamor.
Nationally, only the beaches of Sanxenso with 12, Cartagena y Cangas de Morrazo with 10 and Calvià with 9 beat Orihuela, but with the 8 flags along the 16 kilometres of the coast of Orihuela, it represents the largest concentration of awards in the whole of Spain.
