“Disappearing” Brits

Torrevieja’s population is continuing to plummet according to official padron figures which show that 15 thousand residents have “disappeared” over the last two years, of which a large proportion are said to be UK citizens. The municipal census figures put Torrevieja’s population at just over 93 thousand, with compared to 108 thousand in June 2014, with the proportion of foreign residents down to 46 percent as opposed to 51 percent two years ago.

The largest number of non-Spanish nationals come from Britain, with the official figure logged as 6.706, a massive fall from nearly 13 thousand registered on padrons in 2014. A combination of Brits leaving the area; splitting more time between Torrevieja and the UK; and simply not bothering to re-register on the muncipal padron is said to be behind the fall, along with an over-estimation of population figures from the previous Torrevieja council compared to the lower figure of the National Statistics Institute came up with.
