The vice president of the Municipal Board of Habaneras, Domingo Soler, has announced that the Spanish national TV broadcaster, TVE, will broadcast the International Habaneras Contest on their LA2 channel on Saturday, September 1.

There had been rumour and controversy surrounding this year´s television broadcast, which Soler hoped to silence, whilst explaining that the event is “the largest tourist, social and cultural event that is made in Torrevieja, there is no other like it, it has been televised for many years and this year too.”

However, Soler also explained how it had not been easy, “We have been working in silence since May to get it televised, the difficulties we have experienced are the history that I am left with”, referring to the change of the State Government that has affected the negotiation.

The 64th edition of the International Habaneras and Polyphony Competition, which was held from July 22 to 28, was attended in the contest phase by twelve choirs from eleven countries – Spain, Ukraine, China, Serbia, Romania, Belarus, Mexico, Colombia, Indonesia, Macedonia and the Philippines.

If you don´t want to know who won, do not read on. The Philippine ‘University of Philippines Singing Ambassadors’ walked away with first prize, he Belarusian female choir ‘The Girl’s Choir Raniza’ were in second place and the Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga Choir of Colombia came third, along with the vocal group ‘Amitié’.
