The Valencia regional tourism department has published the results of this year’s social media barometer, which shows Torrevieja amongst the most talked about destinations throughout the first six months of this year.

It’s the eleventh time the results have been published, a system which trolls through the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube looking for mentions of areas in the region.

Valencia city is top of the list, followed by Benidorm and Alicante. The regional capital scored 55,141, whereas Torrevieja had 27,298, a figure which is the number of followers on Facebook alone.

Santa Pola also scored well amongst the mid-range sector, and if you’re thinking that maybe Orihuela didn’t do so well because nobody could spell it, the likes of Benicàssim and Berenguer were in the same group.

On Twitter, Valencia is tops once again with 32,360 followers, Alicante is second with 20,469 and Elche is in third place with 12,503. Benidorm is still hanging in just over the 10k group with 10,008, and in the below 10,000 sector Torrevieja and Santa Pola feature once again (still no Orihuela).

As for Instagram, guess who’s top? Yes, Valencia, with 16,916 folllowers, Benidorm in second with 15,607, and Alicante in third with 14,789. In the below 10,000 sector, Torrevieja and Santa Pola are there again, along with Elche. We’ll not even mention Orihuela (oh, too late).

YouTube, the video platform taking over the visual lives of younger people, has offered a surprise, no not that Orihuela features, but in that Valencia is not top. On the video platform, Peñíscola is the leader with 2,403,852 viewers, way ahead of Valencia with 640,265, and Alicante which has 471,205. Torrevieja is somewhere in the list with 189,991, and Santa Pola with 114,061, whereas Orihuela, oh, we did it again!

Anyway, these results were for the first half of the year, you can change it by taking pictures, videos, or just writing about how wonderful the local area is, using hashtags, such as #Orihuela, and sharing your experiences with the rest of the social media world.
