Environmental plans which look set to be approved to protect wetlands of Rabasa in Alicante may have serious repercussions for the proposed site of the long awaited branch of furniture giant Ikea.
Plans working their way through the Department of Infrastructure show that the development would occupy an area of 2,216.178 square meters. Of these, 287,000 will go to Ikea, with other areas divided into zones such as for commercial, technological and urban use, along with the required road and utility infrastructure to enable the site to function.
However, the protected green area required a 500 metre protective perimeter, which would fall across the proposed plans for the superstore.
The obvious benefits of protecting the environment are now being discussed against those that the store would bring to the region, with an anticipated 4,400 direct jobs, and additional 4,400 indirect jobs and 2,000 temporary positions, and the 367.2 million euro budget allocated to the project.
The environmental protest has been officially filed, which could have the backing of the European Union, but not without objection from both the council and the commercial entities.
