MINISTER BELIEVES CORVERA WILL OPEN THIS YEAR

Following on from last week´s news that Castellón airport is set to open before Christmas, the Murcia Minister of Development, Public Works and Planning, Manuel Campos, has stated that the new Murcia Regional Airport at Corvera would also be open between the months of September to December, once the relevant financial credits have been confirmed.

In a radio interview this week, Campos stated that the date of September the 14th had been “shuffled” around, because that was the date proposed by the concessionaire in one of the letters addressed to the then president Ramón Luis Valcárcel. However, Campos also stated that this will depend crucially on the decision of the European Commission on the shareholder loan, and recognizes that “the most realistic” date for opening is “between September and December 2014”, which he considers is “very possible”.

In view of the plans to finance the operation, the decision for the remaining 182 million euro to complete and open the airport lies with Brussels, and the European Commission, as the matter “may affect European legislation on competition”.

Theoretically, according to Campos, “the airport is built and tomorrow we could start to work”, upon completion of the relevant authorisations, although there are still elements that need completing and the final inspections were already postponed until at least after the European elections.
