A court in Madrid has ordered the shutdown of the transport booking website and app Uber, “with immediate effect”.
The site was designed to allow travellers to connect with car drivers and “car share” for their journey, although as there was a financial transaction connected with the provision of transport, the method was classed as the same operation as a taxi service, although the drivers and vehicles therefore lacked the necessary documentation, licensing and insurance for the process.
In an earlier court hearing this month a judge ruled that the system was not a legal operation and therefore banned the operation in the territory of Spain, this latest ruling sets to block the website and mobile phone application, as well as ensuring the cessation of distribution of the app through stores such as the Apple App Store and Google Play, as well as banning the hosting, transmission, access to telecommunications networks and / or the provision of any other equivalent service by the company.
Complaints had been raised by various taxi driver associations across the company of the company creating unfair competition within the road transport sector, in addition to the legal and administrative deficiencies to cover passengers in the event of incident.
Similar complaints have also been raised over websites and applications offering unlicensed tourist accommodation such as private apartments for rent, with both hoteliers and those who license their properties for rental joining the campaign.
