NEW SOLAR PLANT LOOKING FOR LOCAL WORKERS

The municipal government of Elche has signed a collaboration agreement with the company set to build the new solar power plant next to Alicante-Elche airport, in order to guarantee that jobs for workers to build the site will be sourced from the local community.

Himin Solar, who are responsible for completing the project, have agreed to not only hire local workers, but focus on those who have been in long term unemployment, subject to the necessary qualifications and abilities.

The company have also said that they will provide extensive training courses “to the 250 workers who, in principle, do not require specific training, except for some positions that are aimed at electricians working in high and low voltage locations”, and once the initial one-year installation phase is complete, they will also offer 40 permanent maintenance jobs at the plant.

According to a statement issued by the council, the Mayor, Mercedes Alonso, stressed that the project has already been declared on “Community Interest” by the Valencian Government, an important accreditation to ensure that the project will be completed.

Once completed in 2020, the photovoltaic plant will have 250,000 solar panels and reach a maximum output of 250 megawatts. The company will make an initial investment of 50 million euros, which later will be increased gradually, creating more jobs in Elche. The total budget for this project is 250 million euro.

The 250,000 solar panels will cover a land area of 100 hectares at Finca de la Marquesa, on the Elche to El Altet road, and eventually provide power to about 20,000 families, expected to be distributed through the local area. As part of the ongoing commitment to renewable energies, the creation of the site will prevent 30,000 tons of CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere.

The 250 million euro investment for the scheme will be provided by the private sector, with “various” foreign funds involved in the scheme, including investment from China.

The company are now asking for applications by means of a C.V. which can be provided through the department of labour at the town hall for those already registered, or via the Concejalía de Empresa y Empleo, located on calle Uberna 2 in Elche, although resumes and information can also be sent direct to contact@himin.es
