Fire fighters from Torrevieja were called to assist in knocking down a lamppost in the Torretas area of the town, in order to prevent the installation crashing down onto nearby homes.
Residents on calle Cerezo had been concerned about the lack of maintenance to lamp posts and were increasingly worried about the state of this particular light which had become at risk as it was showing extreme signs of rust and corrosion around the base.
Other lampposts in the area are in a similar condition, but an inspection had been said to show no imminent danger.
It is by far the first time that the public lighting network has been criticised outside the city centre after residents the urbanisations nearby had complained about lack of lighting at night, again due to a lack of maintenance and attention by the contractors employed by the town hall, and a subsequent lack of action by the authorities who are seldom seen in the area, much as can be said about many town hall public services, according to the residents.
