The Socialist Party of Torrevieja (PSOE) has strongly criticised the continued neglect of the city’s green spaces, highlighting the worsening condition of the Altos de la Bahía park as an example of what they call “systematic abandonment” under the current local government.
In a video shared on social media, PSOE councillor Margarita de Francisco recalled that her group had already denounced the poor state of the park during a municipal plenary session in September 2024. Since then, she says, the situation has deteriorated further, with extensive areas of vegetation now lost.
According to de Francisco, the council has consistently paid monthly invoices exceeding €260,000 to the joint venture responsible for the upkeep of parks and gardens, formed by Actúa and Gestión STV. Despite these payments, she argues, the service has been delivered without proper oversight from the governing Partido Popular (PP), resulting in contracts being honoured financially but not in practice.
“The lack of monitoring has allowed the contracted companies to neglect their duties,” de Francisco said. She pointed out that much of the flora has died due to water shortages, even though since April 2022 the council has held a contract—also awarded to Actúa—for the maintenance of the municipal irrigation network, along with smaller agreements for additional repairs.
The PSOE has also questioned whether the new multi-million-euro contract recently awarded to Actúa Servicios y Medio Ambiente SL will change matters. De Francisco warned that reversing the decline will not be quick or easy:
“The deterioration of our parks and the loss of vegetation have reached a critical stage. Years of inaction, tolerated by the local PP government, have left many spaces at a point of no return.”
The opposition group is demanding accountability from the city council, insisting that Torrevieja residents deserve well-maintained public spaces that reflect the scale of the investment already being paid for.
