Yesterday, Monday, March 9th, the Rojales Town Council deployed a mobile speed camera on the streets to help keep an eye on speeding. The Local Police got the equipment to help stop reckless driving and make the roads safer.
The main reason for the measure is that citizens have been complaining for years about some cars speeding on different roads in the town. The town council said that these circumstances are worrying people because they put pedestrians and other road users at risk.
The City Council has chosen to use speed bumps as the principal way to keep fast cars off of some streets until recently. Over time, though, these devices have caused problems between neighbours, mostly because of the noise that cars make as they drive over them, which is worse at night.
As required by the rules for using these devices, the “speed monitored by radar” signs will be put up in the next few days. In the meantime, the places where speed checks are done will only be marked when the radar is working.
The municipal council wants to make it clear that the main goal of this law is not to punish people, but to stop them from doing something. The goal of the campaign is to make drivers more aware of how important it is to follow speed limits, as speeding is still one of the leading causes of car accidents.
The police chief in the area stressed how the new device would scare people away. “We would rather not have to put these kinds of systems in place and have drivers follow the posted speed limits, as this is the best way to lower the risks that lead to accidents.” He said, “The radar will make our streets safer for traffic.”
Antonio López García, the Councillor for Police, said that the City Council is committed to all things linked to road safety. “We work to make road safety better, just like we do with all other public safety measures that help make the world a safer place,” he said.
The Rojales City Council is using this new control tool to strengthen its plan to make city roads safer and lower the risks of driving too fast in the city.
