The Torrevieja Department of Festivities has announced the return of the traditional Sardine Festival in La Mata, scheduled to take place this Sunday, 21st June. Organised in collaboration with the Association of Hospitality Companies of Torrevieja and District, the Fishermen’s Guild, and the Confraternity of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the popular event will welcome locals, residents and visitors alike to celebrate the arrival of summer.
The festivities will commence at 12 noon in the Plaza Encarnación Puchol in La Mata. This highly anticipated summer launch event is set to bring hundreds of people together in a family-friendly atmosphere that combines gastronomy, music and leisure activities.
Throughout the day, attendees will be treated to free portions of sardines, bread and beer, which will be distributed until stocks run out. The central square will serve as a grand meeting point to honour one of the most deep-rooted traditions in the local festive calendar.
Entertainment for the day includes a live DJ set providing the musical backdrop for the celebration, alongside a foam cannon designed to refresh and entertain the crowds, particularly the younger participants. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take part in a raffle to win several hams, which remains one of the most anticipated highlights of the popular gathering.
Torrevieja Council has encouraged the entire community to join in this day of coexistence, which has been created to promote sharing, fun and welcoming the summer season in an open, festive environment suitable for all ages.
