A 27-year-old man required rescue on Friday, 17th July, after suffering from heatstroke while attempting to climb to the Cruz de la Muela, which sits at the top of the Sierra de Orihuela.
The hiker had begun his ascent from the Montepinar residential development when he was forced to call for assistance. The Provincial Fire Consortium received the alert at 12:53 pm, initiating an operation that continued for two hours until 2:55 pm.
To reach the man, a helicopter was deployed directly from the Finestrat helipad. Once the rescue team located him, they descended to his position and lifted him onto a stretcher using a winch. He was subsequently evacuated to the Vega Baja University Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, firefighters from the Orihuela fire station arrived by land to assist the injured man’s companions, guiding them safely back to their vehicles.
