Benidorm Local Police handle a vast range of situations during the summer season as high numbers of tourists visit the city. Documents, mobile phones, keys, and wallets form part of the everyday routine for the lost and found service, but a discovery made yesterday, Monday 3rd August, surprised even the most experienced officers. A funeral urn containing human ashes was discovered inside a locker at a local supermarket, where a customer had left it after storing their belongings.
Quique Tortosa, spokesperson for the Benidorm Local Police, explained that the manager of the store contacted officers after finding the urn while inspecting the customer lockers. Since then, the Local Police have been attempting to identify the owner and track down the relatives of the deceased, though these enquiries have not yet produced any results.
The find has particularly struck the officers, who are accustomed to dealing with typical lost property during the busy holiday period rather than funerary remains. Due to the difficulty in identifying the owners, the Local Police have published an appeal on their social media channels in an effort to trace the person who left the urn behind or find a family member who can collect it. Officers are asking anyone with relevant information to contact the Benidorm Local Police headquarters to assist with its return.
If it proves impossible to locate any relatives, the Local Police have confirmed that the urn will be moved to the municipal cemetery in Benidorm. It will remain in custody there until it can be claimed by its rightful owners. The occurrence stands out as one of the most unusual sights of the summer in the resort, proving that in a destination hosting hundreds of thousands of visitors, almost any item can end up in the hands of the authorities.
