Elche Town Council has completed the removal of vehicles from the first storage lot closed down in Torrellano in June. The facility, which covers approximately 20,000 square metres, had been operating without an opening licence. The municipal operation launched in June led to the cessation of activity.
At the end of June, the mayor announced the first of these closures, aiming to guarantee compliance with urban planning laws and the safety of facilities. Municipal officials emphasised that the action was not arbitrary, but rather the result of a thorough administrative procedure that provided full guarantees.
Following further actions in July, three storage lots have now been shut down by the council since the municipal operation began, and the operation remains ongoing.
Several other cases are currently at an advanced stage, having passed the hearing process and entered the resolution phase. Further closures are expected to take place soon, involving storage lots that started operating after the approval of a municipal motion on 23rd April.
In total, more than 110 car parks have been identified across the municipality. Of these, 45 predate the modification of the General Plan and are currently undergoing evaluation to assess their potential regularisation. The owners of these sites have a period of three months to submit technical projects, safety measures and all required documentation.
In addition, around 30 facilities hold provisional licences granted in 2005. These are currently being reviewed, as many have expanded their surface area or altered the conditions of their originally authorised activities.
The municipal government stated that its goal is not to close down businesses indiscriminately but to ensure that all facilities operate on equal terms and in accordance with the law. Firm action will be taken against sites operating without a licence whilst respecting administrative procedures.
