The Orihuela and Torrevieja Green Party's joined forces last weekend as they made a stand, first at la Playa del Cura de Torrevieja and then at La Zenia beach on the Orihuela Costa, against oil exploration that the government has authorized the off the Canary Islands.
They say that they now fear that exploration could soon be approved in the Gulf of Valencia
This was the very last action carried out by Orihuela mayor Monserrate Guillen prior to suffering his heart attack on Sunday morning.
Also attending the demo was Torrevieja Councillor José Manuel Dolon who said that evedn the introduction of surveys off the regional coast would result in "a serious threat to coastal tourism which at this time of the year contributes up to 80% of the economy and so we ask the support of the citizens."
The ‘Greens' say that in the coming weeks they will be travelling up and down the Valencian coastline promoting sustainable energy, because the proposed surveys will only bring harm to our region.
Regional politician González Pons argued that the granting of surveys would be very harmful." He also denounced "the silence of regional President Fabra who should be looking after the interests of his own people rather than following the government positions taken on the Balearic and Canary Islands."

The Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ) is currently holding an exhibition, "Deltebre I. History of a shipwreck" displaying artefacts rescued from a British navy ship which was sunk in the mouth of the Ebro in 1813. And amongst the items exhibited is a 210 year old bottle of Fondillón wine which was produced in the province of Alicante.
The exhibition, which was opened last week by the President of the Council of Alicante, Luisa Pastor, will be open until January 11, 2015. In the main it is as a result of a joint effort by the Archaeology Museum-Centre d 'Submerged Archaeology of Catalonia and Girona - MARQ and the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Wines of Alicante.
The exhibition provides a comprehensive view of the remains that were recovered from the British wreck displaying about a hundred everyday objects, including the 210 year old bottle of Alicante wine, which, when it was found in 2008 was completely intact and sealed.
The President was accompanied by the Deputy Councillor of Culture, Juan Bautista Rosello, the president of the DOP, Antonio Miguel Navarro, and the President of the Banco Sabadell Foundation, which is sponsoring the exhibition.
Pastor said that "it is an exceptional exhibition as the 'Deltebre I' is from one of the few archaeological vessels that has suffered no looting, which has allowed us to see a fascinating episode in the history, with objects that are still in very good condition after 200 years. Moreover, there is still a great deal of underwater excavation that remains unfinished, there is still much to discover and as we speak there are teams that are still are working on the wreck."
The exhibition also includes a variety of weapons that were being used at that time, mortar bombs, grenades, gunpowder, personal weapons and ammunition of different calibres. There are also many navigational items that have been recovered from the wreck and from the living quarters of the officers, including a sextant, the Captain's seal, as well as a selection of clothing and footwear.
In June 1813, after an unsuccessful expedition to liberate the city of Tarragona from the domain of Napoleonic forces, eighteen ships of a convoy supervised by the Lt. General John Murray, were surprised by strong gales. Five of them ran aground in the Ebro delta on the Catalonia coast.
Almost 200 years later, Deltebre I was found by local fishermen, and has been the subject of an archaeological study since 2008 by the Centre for Underwater Archaeology of Catalonia (CASC-MAC).

Blackpool fans have been left rocked - after a pre-season trip to Spain was dramatically cancelled - with scheduled games at La Manga given the boot due to a shortage of PLAYERS!
“The manager has taken the decision to cancel the pre-season tour - we will be able to be much more productive here, than in Spain,” said chairman Karl Oyston. Seasiders new manager Jose Riga cancelled pre-season friendlies against La Liga outfit Granada CF on July 26, and against FC Cartagena on July 28.
And instead of being at the La Manga Club Football Academy the Blackpool squad and fans - due to fly to La Manga for a nine-day pre-season camp - remain in Britain. Problems arose due to Blackpool having a mere eight senior contracted players - leading to Riga postponing the Spanish trip.
“We feel our time will be better served trying to get some player deals. It wasn't an easy decision," said Oyston. Supporters had booked flights and accommodation in the La Manga area to watch the pre-season games - and take in a few days' holiday.
There is discontent amongst fans and Oyston - with the club having a paltry eight senior players on their books - ahead of the 2014-15 season kicking-off next month. Oyston, set to compensate supporters who have booked flights to Spain, said: “I hope we can deal with this fairly."
Riga and Oyston have held talks over the club's transfer policy. And Oyston said: “We had a chat and are determined to resolve this situation." ends
