Anybody with an interest in local history will be excited by the latest development released on the website of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura, as maps and aerial photographs of most of the Torrevieja and Orihuela area have been released, spanning the last 50 years.
Residents will also be able to look at the historic documents and see what their home is now built on, as well as how the surrounding area has evolved through the growth of the last half century.
At a variety of resolutions, the maps are all now available on an interface similar to Google Earth, but with the added interest of local aerial shots from their archives.
In order to view the maps, you need to visit their website, which is at www.chsegura.es/chsic/, and then scroll around to find the location of interest. Once you have found where you want to look at, hover with your mouse over the globe at the top left of the screen. As you are hovering, you should see a menu appear below the globe. Once this is in view, you then need to click on the option named “Mapas base”. This in turn brings up another menu where you can then click on the appropriate one through history, and see the location change before your eyes.
Keep in mind that the site may take a while to load on a slower connection, as the maps are very large and detailed, and not all areas are covered by every map, so you might not see anything at first, but keep trying different maps and it is quite likely you will find something of interest and maybe just the plot of land or a farm where you are now sitting connected to the modern world looking back.
