A motorist, said to be a British citizen of 83 years of age, has been arrested by the Guardia Civil accused of having knocked down a cyclist in Los Alcázares and then fleeing the scene.
The victim, said to be a 54 year old male of North African origin, was riding along the road that connects Los Alcázares with Torre Pacheco, when, according to sources from the local police, he crossed the road from side to side and was hit by a vehicle.
The road is described as being one designed for agricultural traffic, on an industrial estate, very narrow in places, with no “hard shoulder”. Although roundabouts had been placed on the road in various places during recent years, the road is still lacking in normal safety features.
The force of the blow was such that, according to witnesses, the cyclist was thrown into the air, landing several metres from the impact point.
Another motorist who observed the events was said to have pursued the driver immediately after the incident. An emergency ambulance attended the scene but could do nothing other than confirm the death of the cyclist.
