PRISON FOR TORREVIEJA NOTARY MURDERERS

Of the sixteen people standing trial, three motorbike riding murders must spend between 6 and 26 years in prison, following a verdict which confirms their guilt in the murder of a Notary in Torrevieja in 2009.

In October, 2009, Juan José Martinez Tomás, a popular Notary who operated from his offices in Torrevieja, was fatally shot in the abdomen following a struggle with two men who had entered his premises intending to commit armed robbery.

The 16 defendants were tried on charges of conspiracy, robbery with violence and attempted use of weapons, robbery and use of a weapon, attempted murder, manslaughter, concealment, falsification of official documents, breach of conviction and illegal possession of weapons.

Juan Miguel Roig Beckingham was sentenced to 26 years in prison for murder, Alexey Smirnov was given a sentence of six years and nine months as an accomplice to murder, and Bernardo Ríos was sentenced to 6 years and 9 months in prison.

These three men must compensate the family of the victim, in the case of the first two with compensation to which they have been convicted of jointly and severally amounting to 200,000 euro and the case of an accomplice, compensation of 30,000 euro.
