A woman has been killed and five other people injured, three of whom were women and the other two men, in a traffic crash on the N-332 road near Gran Alacant in Santa Pola.
According to the emergency coordination centre, the incident occurred at 17:15, resulting in the emergency services responding instantly. Three of the people involved were released from their vehicles by the emergency crews.
Although no information on the deceased woman has been issued, one of the injured women is said to be 52 years of age and is in a critical condition, she was transferred to the Hospital General de Elche. Another woman, also described as being in a critical condition, was taken to the General Hospital of Alicante.
A 57 year old man suffered chest trauma and was taken to General Hospital de Elche in a serious condition, whereas the remaining two, a woman of 34 years of age and a man of 39, were taken to the Hospital Vinalopó in Elche to be treated for less serious injuries.
A total of fifteen fire fighters attended the scene, with five fire trucks, dispatched from both Alicante and San Vicente, along with two SAMU paramedic and one basic life support ambulances, with the road being closed to traffic whilst they carried out their tasks.
Meanwhile, the DGT traffic department have said that a total of ten people died on the roads during the special traffic operation of the May holiday, a provisional figure from between 15:00 on Wednesday and 20:00 on Sunday.
There were a total of ten accidents reported and a further eleven people injured. Saturday was statistically the worse day with four fatalities and ten people injured.
Heavy traffic was still being reported will into the evening as many of the coastal visitors returned inland after the holiday period.
