The leak forced the closure of the AP7 for 4 hours

A leak from a tanker carrying 8,000 ltrs of hydrochloric acid forced the closure of the AP 7 in Benicarlo on Monday after it had been parked up in a service station.

The incident occurred just after 6.30 pm when the tanker pulled into the service area to refuel. The road was immediately closed by officers from the Provincial Fire Service and the Civil Guard Traffico.

Three fire crews were called to the incident, one of which was a Chemical Risk Unit, which proceeded to seal the leak.

Subsequently, the tanker company sent a replacement vehicle into which the remaining acid was transferred. Firefighters contained the acid that had spilled onto the road ensuring that it did not spread into adjacent drains.

The area was thoroughly cleaned and the 50 or so litres of spilled acid neutralized. The service area and adjacent roads were re opened at approximately 10.15 pm.
