A routine traffic stop has uncovered a series of alleged reckless driving incidents across various roads in the province of Alicante. The Guardia Civil has investigated a 33-year-old Belgian man who recorded himself behind the wheel while performing dangerous manoeuvres and apparent races with other vehicles, footage which he subsequently shared on social media.
The incidents took place over more than three years, between 2023 and August 2026, on roads including the A-70 dual carriageway and regional roads CV-825 and CV-820, along stretches located between Agost, Alicante, Monforte del Cid and San Vicente del Raspeig.
According to the Guardia Civil Command in Alicante yesterday, Tuesday 20th October, the detected manoeuvres posed a serious risk to both the driver himself and other road users, particularly on the A-70, a dual carriageway known for its high traffic density.
The investigation began almost by chance. An officer from the Alicante Traffic Detachment pulled over a vehicle during a routine check and, shortly afterwards, discovered that the intervention had been recorded and posted on social media.
Upon accessing the profile where the recording was shared, the officer found numerous posts going far beyond that single stop. The videos showed vehicles carrying out reckless driving manoeuvres and what appeared to be races on open public roads.
Given the severity of the footage, the officer passed the information to the Traffic Investigation and Analysis Group (GIAT) of the Alicante Traffic Subsector, whose specialists launched an investigation to clarify the events and identify the person responsible.
Analysis of the posts allowed investigators to reconstruct the driver’s activity and place the manoeuvres between 2023 and last August.
Officers successfully identified three different vehicles appearing in the recordings, all registered under the name of the same individual. The 33-year-old owner admitted to having driven all three cars during the period under investigation.
The footage also enabled officers to locate the scenes of the alleged offences, including the CV-825 and CV-820 roads, as well as various stretches of the A-70, one of the main transport arteries in the Alicante area.
The Guardia Civil considers these actions particularly dangerous as they were carried out on roads regularly used by other motorists, creating a risk of causing serious accidents.
As a result of the investigation, the man is accused of an alleged offence against road safety for driving with manifest recklessness, under Article 380 of the Penal Code.
This offence carries potential penalties of six months to two years in prison, alongside the deprivation of the right to drive motor vehicles and mopeds for a period ranging from more than one year up to six years.
The proceedings conducted by the Guardia Civil have been forwarded to the Civil and Investigating Section of the Court of First Instance in Novelda, acting as the duty court.
The Guardia Civil reminded the public that it maintains surveillance operations across various points in the province of Alicante where gatherings of cars and motorcycles frequently occur, particularly during weekends and public holidays.
During these checks, officers monitor speed, alcohol levels and drug consumption to detect dangerous behaviour and reduce the risk of road accidents.
