GUARDAMAR BANS ANIMAL CIRCUSES

A motion tabled by the Esquerra Unida de Guardamar has been approved unanimously, which now lists the town of Guardamar del Segura amongst the growing number of locations to ban circuses with animals.

The text of the motion was to confirm the town hall´s commitment to “ethical, social and environmental principles and with respect to not cause or permit the cruelty and suffering to animals”, stating that “the exhibition and display of animals in circuses and fairs in the city” is prohibited.

The group stated in the proposal that “animals should not be abused or be subject to acts involving their behavioural changes such as animals used in circuses. Despite being raised in captivity, they are still wild animals and as such their behaviour cannot be controlled and usually the only way to keep them more or less docile or submissive is through violent acts”.

The motion was passed unanimously, demonstrating the commitment of all political groups to this problem, in a municipality with a major environmental concern for legacy and everything related to environmental issues.

The Los Verdes green party say that they submitted a similar motion in Orihuela some years ago, but the move was rejected by the Partido Popular majority.

With the adoption of this motion Guardamar will be included in the list of towns in Spain free of animal circuses and fairs, a list that now exceeds 170 locations nationwide.
