The replacement of the lift connecting the Raval Roig neighbourhood in Alicante with Postiguet beach faces further delays after a public tender ended without receiving a single bid. Alicante City Council allocated a budget of 70,000 euro for the project located on Avenida de Jovellanos, next to the Postiguet footbridge. The Contracting Board confirmed this week that no companies submitted proposals, leaving the procedure declared void under current regulations. The local government will now have to find a new formula to re-launch the process and secure a contractor for the elevator, which remained out of service yesterday, Thursday 22nd October.
In response to the outcome, the main opposition party, the PSOE, called on Mayor Luis Barcala to revise the financial allocation and speed up the replacement process. Spokesperson Trini Amorós suggested that the 70,000 euro budget may be insufficient and criticised the municipal management for prolonging an accessibility issue that local residents have suffered for years. Amorós noted that funds were earmarked in 2025, but project specifications were not drafted until May 2026, with the tender approved on 29th September. The PSOE demanded that the local government explain the failed tender, adjust the terms, and increase the budget if needed to ensure the contract is awarded quickly.
The planned contract carried an investment of 70,000 euro and a three-month execution window. Work requirements include dismantling the existing structure and installing a custom exterior lift built to withstand coastal conditions, including humidity and salinity. Specifications call for a panoramic cabin featuring safety glass panels, stainless steel framing, anti-corrosion protection, air conditioning, LED lighting, and an overhead extractor. Despite these technical details, no firm agreed to take on the work under the conditions set out by Alicante City Council.
